Marble Falls tennis beats Salado in district play

The Marble Falls High School team tennis team crushed Salado 19-0 to go to 2-0 in District 25-4A play.

“Our players who’ve been out there, they did an amazing job,” head coach Samuel Whitley said. “They took care of business.”

While the Mustangs cruised in their matches, the Lady Eagles extended matches against the Lady Mustangs, particularly at No. 1 girls doubles. But the results were the same. Marble Falls didn’t lose a set.

The scores were even more remarkable considering three Mustangs and Lady Mustangs who normally play weren’t available. Therefore, Whitley inserted underclassmen Savannah Hamblin, Briana Morales and Nicolas Smith into the lineup.

“These young kids stepped right up,” he said. “These young players stepped right in to keep the ball rolling.”

While both programs’ top players faced off in district play, Whitley bused underclassmen to Marble Falls Middle School where they faced Salado’s underclassmen. Whitley said both programs benefitted greatly.

“We have great courts over there and grate facilities over there,” he said. “We let the young kids play, his and mine. We have a lot of players on the team. I’m trying to develop a whole program. It’ll make a big difference in the future. Our district has given us good facilities; we have good courts at the middle school.”

Marble Falls welcomes Belton New Tech at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, to the Charlie and Nancy Herrington Tennis Center.
